Your role and responsibilities
We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced R&D Senior Engineer with focus on Quality and Reliability to be part of
the expansion of our business with a novel solid state transformer technology for datacenter applications. In this
role, you will have the opportunity to be part of the ELDS R&D Power Electronics center of excellence team for Solid
State Transformer in charge of the design and development of the future Solid State Transformer products family with
first focus on Data Center application requirements. In this context, and as part of the R&D SST development team, the
Power Electronics Quality and Reliability Senior R&D Engineer will have special focus on performing theoretical and
experimental reliability analysis at components, sub-assemblies and at a system level, as well as linking the findings
to the Quality assurance plans with special emphasis to the identified critical elements and their critical to quality
parameters from the design phase to the ramp-up of the production and the life cycle management of the SST products.
The location for this position is Baden-Daettwil in Switzerland, with future relocation possibilities to other
production locations.
The main responsibilities include

Member of the SST for Data Center R&D team, leading the reliability analyses and assessment for Power Electronics
Components (e.g. semiconductors, control HW, capacitors, fans, etc.), assemblies, and subsystems utilizing statistical
methods and tools for reliability prediction and modelling (MTFB/ FIT). This is to be performed in close collaboration
with the R&D team, including the identification risks and defining the corresponding mitigation actions and reliability
design guidelines through tools such as Failure Modes and Effect Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis, Physics of Failure
methodologies, electrical, mechanical and thermal stress analysis, test data review and assessment and reference to
relevant industry standards.

Lead the reliability plans and quality requirements including internal and suppliers’ reliability and quality testing
plans as well as supporting the internal quality assurance actions involving the internal supply chain management,
production and operation teams. This includes the identification of patterns and trends related to reliability, quality
and performance from internal and external reliability testing and production data as well as root case analysis and
corrective and preventive actions for issues identified during the R&D Validation and Qualification phases, Production
and Field Operation.

Provide close support and collaboration with the productization and operations teams for the SST product quality
assurance plans development and maintenance for mass production and fleet performance tracking. This includes internal
and external audits, routine and screening testing activities, Statistical Process Control monitoring, documentation
management and quality KPIs definition, monitoring and reporting to ensure product conformity and continuous
improvement throughout the product lifecycle.

Actively contribution to the maintenance and further development of the key Power Electronics Technologies Expertise
and Know-How of the SST for Datacenters R&D team with focus on robust design for reliability and quality assurance.
You will be part of advanced R&D and productization activities in the field of power electronics for the ABB SST for
Datacenter Products, in close cooperation with a highly qualified senior team of R&D engineers and stakeholders in a
global and multicultural setup.
Qualifications for the role

University Master’s degree / PhD in the field of engineering (electrical, mechatronics, etc.), or Equivalent
Experience in the field of reliability and quality engineering with focus on Power Electronics products. Experience in
the field of Medium Voltage and High Power converters is a plus.

Solid background know-how and expertise in Reliability analysis, testing and assessment, with direct impact to product
design, production quality plans and mitigation actions identification applying state of the art reliability and
quality tools and methods.

Experience and high interest in theoretical and practical reliability and quality assurance activities related to
Power Electronics products development and lifecycle management for mass production, including interaction and
communication with different stakeholders.

Interest in applied research and product development, self-organized, motivated person, that likes to work in a highly
qualified research and development team composed of experts in different domains and global locations.

Fluency in written and spoken English. German is a plus.

Availability to travel sporadically.
