The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within
Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health
innovation and fundamentals of nature. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions
for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations.
Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2300
people.
For the Condensed Matter Theory Group, we are looking for
PhD Students in “Structure and excitations in complex, disordered quantum systems”
Your tasks
- Explore the interplay of disorder, interactions and quantum fluctuations
- Study quantum localization and quantum glasses and their various interconnections. Elucidate the intricate spatial
structure and nature of the order and excitations in complex quantum systems
- The theoretical PhD thesis will be carried out in partial collaboration with experimental groups at PSI
Your profile
- Master’s degree in theoretical physics
- Particular interest in quantum physics, condensed matter theory/quantum statistical physics and possibly quantum
information
- You like to work on technically and conceptually challenging problems
We offer
Our institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative and dynamic collaboration. You will profit from a
systematic training on the job, in addition to personal development possibilities and our pronounced vocational
training culture. If you wish to optimally combine work and family life or other personal interests, we are able to
support you with our modern employment conditions and the on-site infrastructure.
You will be registered as a PhD Student at the University of Zürich, while your main working place will be at the Paul
Scherrer Institute in Villigen. Your PhD thesis will be supervised by Dr Markus Müller (senior scientist CMT/LTC, PSI)
and co-supervised by Prof. Dr Titus Neupert (Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics, University of Zürich). You will be
part of PSI’s Quantum Technology Collaboration.
For further information, please contact Dr Markus Müller, e-mail markus.mueller@psi.ch.
Please submit your application online by 5 June 2026 (including addresses of referees) for the position as a PhD
Student (Index-Nr. 7202-28199 & 7202-28200).
